3 Takeaways from EmpireJS

I went to the EmpireJS conference thanks to Work-Bench. It was a great first conference to be at because I consider myself an amateur javascripter so there was a lot that I could learn.

Using Google Spreadsheets with Middleman as a faux backend

Middleman is a great tool to create a static website, but still have some things that you can take for granted with the Rails framework. Namely, you can use Ruby, ERB tags, SASS, and you can deploy quickly to heroku. Also, a big strength (but also a weakness) of Middleman is that it limits the extent of what you can do, so it makes sure that what you are doing is purposeful so that you do not create technical debt.

Fantasy Baseball and Ruby with Kimono Labs API

It seems silly, but one of the things I really wanted to do once I learned to program was to use it to improve my fantasy sports teams. I play fantasy baseball, football, and basketball with 12+ of my childhood friends, but I am historically in the bottom of the league.
